Our Strategic Objectives

Four objectives frame NGERO's work through 2032, each aligned to the UNEP Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Ecosystem Restoration and Conservation

NGERO will prioritize the restoration and conservation of critical habitats within the Nyanza Gulf ecosystem, including wetlands, forests, and aquatic ecosystems, to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

SDG / Global Framework Alignment: This objective corresponds to Target 1 of the UNEP Global Biodiversity Framework and contributes to SDG 15 (Life on Land) by promoting the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems.

Sustainable Resource Management

NGERO will promote sustainable resource management practices, including fisheries management, water quality improvement, and sustainable land use, to ensure the long-term health and productivity of the Nyanza Gulf ecosystem.

SDG / Global Framework Alignment: This objective aligns with Targets 2 and 14.2 of the UNEP Global Biodiversity Framework and contributes to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 by promoting sustainable fisheries management, conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems, and the sustainable use of terrestrial and aquatic resources.

Community Engagement and Capacity Building

NGERO will actively engage with local communities, including fisherfolk, farmers, and other stakeholders, to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation, build capacity for sustainable resource management, and foster community participation in decision-making processes.

SDG / Global Framework Alignment: This objective supports Target 3 of the UNEP Global Biodiversity Framework and contributes to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnerships for the implementation of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

Policy Advocacy and Institutional Strengthening

NGERO will advocate for the adoption and implementation of policies and regulations that support biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration within the Nyanza Gulf region. Additionally, NGERO will work to strengthen institutional capacities at local, national, and regional levels to support effective biodiversity governance.

SDG / Global Framework Alignment: This objective corresponds to Target 4 of the UNEP Global Biodiversity Framework and contributes to SDG 17 by promoting capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and institutional strengthening for the implementation of sustainable development initiatives.

NGERO will implement its strategic plan through a combination of research, monitoring, capacity-building, community engagement, and advocacy activities, guided by the principles of ecosystem-based management, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
